As the years go by, women keep searching for new ways to keep their bodies hairless without the pain or inconvenience of waxing or shaving. Hair removal has now become a $10 billion industry. When it first came out, laser hair removal was time consuming, costly as well as temporary. Over the years, it has gotten more permanent and promises women that they will never have to shave or wax again.

Now that the FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) has approved laser hair removal at home, it is becoming even easier to remove hair permanently, cost effectively and painlessly. It has to be done several times a month before it can result in any permanent hair removal. It creates clean as well as smooth skin with as little pain as possible. Many women prefer it because it is more private, keeps them from making appointments before hand and affordable. These devices also come with safety features such as skin tone detectors, energy level options, and toll-free customer service lines. Laser hair removal uses a laser light to specifically target each hair. The laser heats the hair follicle to the point where it gets permanently damaged and falls out. This system only works for people with a light skin tone and dark hair because darker hair absorbs the laser’s energy with ease.

However, as with every technological device, this piece of technology also has some disadvantages. The FDA has warned women to seek medical assistance when using laser hair removal at home in case any burning or redness occurs. It is a fairly new piece of technology so caution should definitely be taken. Additionally, this piece of technology reduces hair growth but does not at times, permanently eliminate it. Hair growth can reduce by approximately 50 – 80%. No hair removal product can promise permanent hair removal; similarly, laser hair removal can only promise “permanent” hair removal for a long period of time. It can also cause burning if the skin type or hair colour is not right for the device being used. Some temporary side-effects of this technology include irritated, reddened, or swollen skin. However these side-effects do disappear within a couple days and do not usually leave any permanent marks. It is advisable to use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions in order to avoid these side-effects. In addition to the manufacturer’s instructions, users should use their common sense when taking care of their skin.
